Hunter Comments
I recommend this outfitter

This was my third year hunting with Josh Johannson of Outland Outfitting. Josh is very knowledgeable and runs a very good outfit. His area has a great number of color phased bears in it. Every year I’ve hunted with him I’ve seen colored bears while I was on stand and killed by other hunters in camp. Last year I held out for a color phase and wound up coming home empty handed. The first year I hunted with him I killed a P&Y Black. This year I set out with the same goal of killing a color phased bear.I stayed in a remote outpost tent camp, which was very far off the paved road. Camp consisted of a large canvas cooking tent , Out house tent, Shower tent, a couple sleeping tents, and a couple of enclosed trailers which had freezers in them that were run off generators. Courtney (Josh’s girlfriend) did all the cooking in camp. She’s a great cook and all the meals were very good. They had 2 German Shepards in camp that kept the bears away at night. There was 6 hunters in camp (4 rifle, 2 bow) and two guides. I killed a chocolate bear on the second night of my hunt. Me and my guide (Cole) drove another hunter to his stand and dropped him off first. We had to drive past my stand first in order to drop the other hunter off. On the way back to my stand a chocolate bear was standing on his rear legs in the middle of the trail. Cole said that’s a beautiful bear, we should try and kill it. He stopped the Ranger and as we jumped out to get my bow the bear ran off in the bush towards my stand. Cole said that we’d race over to my stand, and that he’d bait it quickly as I climbed up on the stand. Hopefully the chocolate would come in if he was still close by. Cole finished baiting the barrels, jumped on the Ranger, wished me “Good Luck” and said “Kill the Chocolate!” as he left. About 15 minutes later the bear came into the bait and offered a 15 yard broad side shot .My arrow blew through the bear and stuck into the bait barrel. He ran about 60 yards and I heard him crash and do his death moan. There was no way to contact Cole so I had to sit on stand until dark. Two hours later after I shot my bear a huge Chocolate came in to the bait. He licked my arrow clean of blood, looked up at me, and basically tortured me the rest of the night! He knew he was safe and untouchable and kept coming to the base of the stand and looking up at me smiling. He hung out until dark and fought with an angry sow most of the evening. The sow charged the stand a couple times throughout the evening. She would circle the stand and smack her paw at the ground. She also walked to the base of the stand and would woof and pop her jaws. Shortly after dark Cole showed up with the Ranger to pick me up. The Sow was still there and I told Cole to grab his shotgun as he got out of the Ranger. As I was climbing down out of the stand the sow charged the Ranger in the dark. We decided to quickly hop in and go pick up the rifle hunter. We thought that would give the sow plenty of time to get her cub and leave the area. We returned about a half hour later and recovered my bear. All in All…I had a great time, met some cool people, and killed a color phased bear!
